RUPA
Just 11 years old, Rupa has already endured significant hardship. When she was very young and living with her parents in their home village outside of Kathmandu in Hetauda, her father fell very ill and passed away. Two years later, the same fate befell her mother. Before she died, Rupa’s mother asked Rupa to promise that she would go to school and study hard, and Rupa has taken this to heart. She was sent to live with a distant relative in Kathmandu, and is now attending Darbar High School, the oldest school in Nepal.
At home, Rupa’s situation is far from ideal. Before and after school, she is required to work in a tea shop, and must then do many chores at home, which makes it difficult for her to focus on her studies.
Rupa was identified as a prospective NCEP Scholar by a trusted teacher at Durbar High School, Ms. Puspa, who recognized that she was an extremely bright young lady who was in danger of having to drop out of school for financial reasons. As her class teacher said, “Rupa could be Prime Minister someday”. NCEP is currently working on solutions to help Rupa improve her home situation and focus on doing well at school, as her mother would have wanted.
Rupa is currently in Class 6.
